Every day, millions of South African workers go about their daily activities depending entirely on their command of English ? their second, and sometimes third, language. They are called ?language transferees? and in English speaking countries, that would not be a problem. But in South Africa, where less than 10% of the people are English mother-tongue speakers, the range of languages result in a situation where virtually all business, and most activities on the factory floor, are conducted in English ? the common business language. A ?language transferee? is an individual who transfers from an English second language home environment to an English first language work environment. A poor command of English and lack of basic literacy skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) makes it impossible for the language transferee to take written instruction, let alone upgrade his/her language skills. The unintended result of this use of a secondary language, is that there is a never-ending loss of important profit drivers: time is lost because people have to repeat messages to ensure that the message they conveyed to other workers are successfully transferred; time is lost in repetition that stems from the need to ensure that the receiver of the communication did in fact comprehend the communication with the meaning it was sent; production is lost when messages are conveyed incomplete; production is lost when messages are received but misunderstood; frustration increases due to miscommunication; friction between workers increases due to miscommunication; miscommunication, frustration and friction, lead to loss of time, production and money, and reduce profits. Kaleidoprax is an accredited training provider with The Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA). Kaleidoprax builds capacity in Education, Training and Development (ETD) staff by offering Assessor, Facilitator, Evidence Coach and Learning Material Design courses. The Learning Design Model is suited to both paper-based and electronic platform delivery. ELSA is an acronym for ?English Language Skills Assessment?, a language, norms-based, group measuring instrument that can quantify and diagnose. ELSA: Serves as a Trainability Predictor – Is used as a Selection Tool – Is placed in learning programmes – Enables the learning of reading and writing skills with ?Literati?, an accelerated, fun-filled board-based programme to have adults master these basic skills in 3 weeks (block-release) or 80 hours staggered, but in their mother-tongue. This fast-tracks the English literacy programmes that follow.
